Ten-year-old Amy Keogh of St Teresa's School, Handsworth Wood is pictured with a Malaysian box turtle at the unveiling on Friday - World Turtle Day - of a new breeding centre for endangered turtles at the National Sea Life Centre, Birmingham. Amy's design of a turtle conservation poster earned her a VIP role at the event to launch the breeding facility for turtles threatened with extinction because of thier popularity in the Asian food and medicine trades. The Malaysian turtles, one of seven species housed in the new sanctuary, have already produced two eggs, the first due to hatch in mid-July. Also featured are two Asian leaf turtles, rescued from an illegal consignment bound for the food market in Hong Kong.
