Stray dogs in North Warwickshire could soon meet with a sad end, if homes are not found for them.
For many years, a local charity called ‘Petseek’ has been helping the Borough Council to find loving families for stray and unwanted dogs. Petseek also reunites owners with their lost pets.
However, fewer donations and increased costs now mean that the charity is no longer able to offer its rehoming service and is closing down. It could mean that perfectly healthy and happy dogs may have to be put to sleep, if they do not find new owners.
David Baxendale, Environmental Health Manager explained:
“ Petseek has provided a fantastic service for the past 14 years. However, they’re now finding that fewer people are coming forward to offer a home for a canine companion – and many seem to want puppies or younger dogs, so the older ones are always left behind. These dogs can remain in kennels for some time, leaving no room for new strays.
“ At the moment, I’m looking for alternative arrangements in neighbouring areas, “ David added, “ Otherwise, it could mean that between 40 and 50 dogs a year will have to be destroyed – which is a situation we certainly don’t want to happen. “
Advice from the Borough Council’s dog warden is for dog owners to ensure their pet has a collar and identifying tag so that it can be returned to them quickly. Vets can also insert a microchip implant at a reasonable cost, which can then be scanned to trace the owner.
The Borough Council is keen to hear from people who would like to adopt a dog or who would be interested in taking over from Petseek. Ring the Council’s main number of 01827 715341. There are still six dogs at Petseek needing homes. View their details by ‘googling’ for the Petseek website or arrange a visit to the kennels by ringing 01827 713295.
