‘You don’t need alcohol to have a good time’ is one of the key messages for underage drinkers in a new DVD, starring a group of teenagers from Water Orton.
‘ Sweet 16…What’s the worst that could happen? ‘ was entirely scripted by the young actors who also helped direct and record the film with the help of the Borough Council’s Community Development Team. Filmed over the February half term, ‘Sweet 16’ was funded through the County Council’s ‘Safer, Stronger Communities‘ fund and supported by independent artist, Sarah Zujans.
The plot depicts one of the young people asking an adult to buy alcohol from an off licence – an illegal act in itself, which could result the adults receiving a fine of £5,000. Although the group of underage drinkers seem initially to be having fun, the birthday girl suddenly collapses, prompting the intervention of a local PCSO who calls for an ambulance.
Councillor Barry Beeson, Portfolio Holder for Crime and Disorder was at the film premier on 23rd April along with local Councillor Stuart Swann. Councillor Beeson said:
“ Underage drinking is a huge problem nationally and I’d like to congratulate this group of young people for highlighting the dangers of excessive alcohol consumption. The DVD shows the harsh reality in that alcohol might appear to help you have a good time but there are hidden dangers from excess alchohol, which can have a negative affect on every aspect of your life. “
Copies of the DVD will now go to North Warwickshire schools and youth groups to spread the message to other young people.
