Nice one, Cyril…!

Piano prodigy sets pulses quavering….

A Birmingham schoolboy has made musical history by becoming one of the youngest pupils ever to win a place at the Royal College of Music in London.

Seven-year-old piano prodigy Cyril Vinzent of The Blue Coat School, Edgbaston, was offered a place to study at the prestigious RCM Junior Department following a successful audition earlier last month. From September, he’ll undertake a challenging programme that encompasses piano (first study), clarinet (second study), composition, musicianship, choral work and orchestra.

A gifted musician who began the piano only two years ago, aged five, Cyril has spent the previous three months in Hanover, attending Saturday classes at the University of Music and Theatre – the youngest pupil to do so by almost five years. And already he’s enjoyed his fair share of success closer to home, winning 1st Prize and a Distinction at the Solihull Competitive Music Festival and, for the second time, a Birmingham Music Festival Trophy for his performance in the Pianoforte Solo Class.

Peter Hewitt, Director of the RCM Junior Department commented: ‘Cyril has achieved much as a pianist in one so young. He has a bright, focussed musical intelligence and is developing technical control on exactly the right lines….We might not normally take on one so young, but feel that he has the potential to do very well indeed.’

Blue Coat Director of Music Nick Hill enthused: ‘This is a stunning achievement from such a young child. We’re delighted by everything he’s achieved and greatly look forward to seeing his future progress.’

Though a glittering musical career beckons, the Edgbaston youngster likes nothing better than chilling out and watching his favourite football team, Liverpool. ’I really enjoy making music,’ he admitted, ‘but I’ve other interests as well. And when I grow up, I want to be a composer.’
