On Tuesday the 21st of October, the winter lecture season began with a fascinating talk by Miles Macnair on the career of William James, the enterprising Warwickshire man who took over and completed the Birmingham to Stratford canal and, more importantly, was the driving force behind the construction of the Stratford to Moreton-in-Marsh tramway, originally conceived as a part of grand railway to London.
On Tuesday the 18th of November, there will be a joint meeting with Friends of Shakespeare’s Birthplace when Lesley Smith (in costume as Elizabeth Ist) will talk about Sex and Shakespeare
“Lesley Smith, Curator of Tutbury Castle in Staffordshire, is a well known Elizabethan medical historian and has advised and appeared in a number of television programmes, including “A Taste of the Tudors” and “Great Britains”. She believes passionately that history is for us all and aims to reach as wide an audience as possible. On this occasion, dressed in full costume as Elizabeth I, and with the aid of other props, she will be discussing the sex lives of her erstwhile subjects, including their contraceptive techniques.
This meeting will be held in the Queen Elizabeth Hall at the Shakespeare Centre, Henley Street, Stratford upon Avon and will begin at 7.30 p.m. Admission is free to members of Warwickshire Local History Society, but on this occasion there will be a charge of £3 for visitors - refundable if guests join the Society on the evening.
