CHARITY DELIVERS CANINE CHRISTMAS HAMPERS TO HOMELESS DOGS

Dogs Trust helps pet owners in housing crisis this Christmas

Dogs Trust, the UK’s largest dog welfare charity, will make Christmas a more festive and cosy time for homeless dogs nationwide by providing them with canine Christmas hampers of collars, leads, coats, treats and toys.

The charity set up the Hope Project in 1994 to help dogs whose owners are homeless or in housing crisis, and is concerned a recession will see an increase in the number of clients needing their services.

Clare Kivlehan, Hope Project Manager, explains:

“The project helps owners who are homeless or in housing crisis by offering free and subsidised veterinary treatment for their dogs. This is a particularly pertinent service in the current climate and we fear we’ll see an increase in the number of people needing our help.

We also encourage homelessness hostels and day centres to accept clients with dogs and provide them with practical guidelines. The bond between any dog and owner is a strong one but for homeless people their dog is often their only friend and comfort.

We’ve found that if a hostel does not accept dogs, the owner will stay on the streets in order to keep their companion.”

Dogs Trust staff will help set up the dog kennel area and provide doggy items at Crisis Open Christmas in London from 23 – 30 December. The Crisis centre offers companionship, access to essential services, learning opportunities and entertainment over the Christmas period for the capital’s homeless.

Homelessness organisations or veterinary surgeries interested in finding out more information about the scheme should call Dogs Trust on 020 7837 0006 or email hopeproject@dogstrust.org.uk.

Dogs Trust is the UK’s largest dog welfare charity and cares for over 16,000 stray and abandoned dogs each year.
