In this corner…

Boxing news round-up, local, national and international - exclusive to The Harp Newspaper and Spaghetti Gazetti from Birmingham's foremost boxing journalist Jason Lowe:

Muhammad Ali, the former world heavyweight champion is in the Midlands this month on a rare dinner show at the Stoke football club. The event, which is being organised by CWH promotions, will have the champ also visiting London and possibly Manchester. The 3 date dinner shows will be fast selling out and my advice is to log on to http://www.cwhpromotions.co.uk/ for further details on these events.

Tony TNT Tucker, the former World Heavyweight champion will be visiting the UK in October to step in the ring on a EBF boxing show to take on former professional heavyweight turned EBF champion Mark Potter. As a pro, Mark has entered the ring against the likes of Danny Watts, Luke Simpkin, Danny Williams, Michael Murray and Michael Sprott: 21 wins with 5 losses put him in a difficult position. Tucker saw a different band of fighters with names such as James Buster Douglas, Mike Tyson, Lennox Lewis, Oliver McCall and Herbie Hide. However Potter holds a 17 year lighter gap on Tucker and has never stopped training, where as Tucker may have lapsed in the area. The fight, which is been held in London, will see former Midlands champion Christian Brady taking the corner for Tucker.

The former World and 3 Weight division Champion, Alexis Arguello died last month, which was sad news to the boxing world. The former boxer was said to be struggling since retiring from the ring 1995. He was beat by Scott Walker, a so-called club boxer and Alexis took this very hard. A rumour on the circuit was that he took his own life. Alexis Arguello, 1952-2009.

Arturo Gatti the former two-weight world champion was found dead on July 11 at a luxury two-floor apartment in Brazil, police reports indicated he had been murdered. Gatti died whilst on a second honeymoon with his wife and 10-month old son. The boxer was alleged to have been trying to save his relationship with his 23-year-old Brazilian wife but this was not going well. Reports said the couple were seen arguing and Gatti had been drinking heavily. Over a thousand people attended the funeral on Monday July 20. At the time of print investigations were continuing. Arturo Gatti, 1972-2009.

Top level Irish boxer Johnny Caldwell has died after losing his fight with throat cancer at the age of 71. Hailing from Belfast, the charismatic boxer impressed spectators in both the amateur and professional sector and was often described as the 'Cold eyed killer.' Frequently in the shadow of Freddie Gilroy, Johnny became the first boxer to win Irish and Ulster titles at Jnr and Snr level at flyweight. Representing Ireland he won against Chicago & Montreal Golden Gloves Squads.
.

Johnny really hit fame when he won a bronze medal at the 1956 Olympics wearing a green vest and as a professional he won a British flyweight title. He went on to win a World title followed by British and Commonwealth accolades at Bantamweight. Johnny was a much-loved boxer and will greatly missed. Johnny Caldwell, 1938-2009.

Once again as a professional boxer Birmingham boy Frankie Gavin won in his third fight under Frank Warren. Frankie beat Graham Fearn by TKO in the 2nd round, on the under card of the Amir Khan V Andreas Kotelnik. Khan won the WBA Light weight title on points. I'll be talking to Frankie soon to get a low down on what's in store for him for the rest of this year.

.

The White-Collar side of boxing has enjoyed success since it burst on to the scene and is now recruiting boxers on Internet sites and face-book. Under a new recruitment drive, the White Collar Boxing Council is now advertising nationally for boxers of all types to sign up. Amateurs, professionals and ex-boxers will all share the ring and as will novice up and coming boxers at all ages. Any body interested in having a go can browse http://www.whitecollarboxingcouncil.co.uk/.

Mike Tyson will be in Wolverhampton in November as part of a tour of the UK that will see him visit Essex, Cardiff and Northern Ireland. The once former World Heavyweight champion will be talking about his boxing days and his retirement.
.

Matthew Macklin looks set to fight the Commonwealth Champion Darren Barker another day as the boxer is set to agree a deal to face Amin Asikainen for the vacant European title. Matthew, who is the former Irish Champion and currant British Champion is looking secure a date in September and then if a win is scored he hopes to move on to challenge Barker.
