Credit Crunch fun at Gardeners' Weekend

Over 15,000 people came through the gates of Birmingham City Council's popular gardening show, Gardeners' Weekend last weekend (Sept 5-6) in search of bargain-priced plants and to admire key attractions such as the Credit Munch Garden and Matthew Boulton floral display. The council's Credit Munch garden, set within the TV gardens, showed just how cost effective it is to grow fruit and veg, rather than spending money at the supermarket. Within the floral marquee, the floral display was a show of celebration for the pioneering Birmingham industrialist Matthew Boulton. The display featured a two-metre high floral coin with a portrait of Boulton set the middle with his name, date of birth and death around the edge. Other features included a soup terrine provide by St Paul's Church, a Soho House mosaic-style floor and floral candlesticks each set within a silver metal finish.

Another new and incredibly popular attraction to the show was Mamma Mia's Italian Market. The market sold a range of cheeses, olives, cakes, breads, olive oil, Parma ham, cured meats, nuts, dried fruits, nougat, Arancini and ice cream, which were all directly imported from Italy.

The show once again contained stunning floral displays, prize-winning fruit and vegetables, and bargain-priced plants and equipment to browse through and buy. Aguest panel was also present, offering professional gardening advice for gardeners of all abilities, including One Show star Christine Walkden.

Councillor Martin Mullaney, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Sport and Culture, said:"Gardeners' Weekend has been a regular entry in people's diaries for more than two decades now and continues to offer gardeners of different skills new techniques and tips for their garden. With over 15,000 people coming down for the weekend, it's made for another very successful year."
