Fall in love again this autumn…

Wednesday 18 and Saturday 21 November, 7.15pm

Join Welsh National Opera at Birmingham Hippodrome for an evening full to the brim with passion that will leave you deeply moved and entertained. This autumn we bring to life one of the greatest love stories ever sung – Puccini’s Madam Butterfly.

What makes a good love story?

Nagasaki, early 1900s. Lieutenant Pinkerton marries a young Japanese girl, Cio-Cio-San. For Pinkerton this arrangement is no more than a way to pass time on shore leave. For Cio-Cio-San this is a love that will last forever. When Pinkerton deserts her, she never doubts that he will return. One fine day he will return, but will he return to be re-united with Cio-Cio-San or does he have motives which will break her heart?

In this breathtaking tragic love story Puccini ensures that we feel every emotion our heroine experiences. From her declaration of love to her hopeful dreaming ‘Un bel di’ (One fine day) to the crushing depths of despair, we are with Cio-Cio-San every step of the fateful way.

Everything you need to know about Madam Butterfly in just 3 minutes, in the Butterfly Guide.

Madam Butterfly is sung in Italian with English surtitles so you can follow the story throughout.
