Dance at Ikon Eastside this spring

Anthony Howell

Tango Schumann: Complexities

Tango Classes
Sunday 2 May
International Dance Festival Birmingham
Monday 19 April – Saturday 15 May

Ikon Eastside once again hosts a number of outstanding dance events this spring.

On Sunday 2 May, Ikon presents the work of renowned British performance artist Anthony Howell. Two video works, Homage to the Horses of Saint Petersburg (1998) and The World Turned Upside Down (2002), precede Complexities, a dance performance by Howell and his partner Lindi Köpke. The performance is followed by tango classes, devised for both beginners and experienced dancers.

A former dancer with the Royal Ballet, Howell uses tango to interpret classical music by Robert Schumann and other composers. Howell centres on the essential relationship within the dance, the language of ‘lead and follow’ and the complex exchange between dance and music. According to him, music is integral to dance as partnership is integral to tango.

Complexities has been programmed to sit alongside performances at Ikon Eastside as part of International Dance Festival Birmingham. Showcasing a huge range of dance styles at venues across the city and the West Midlands, IDFB 2010 is one of the world’s biggest dance festivals. It will animate the city with a programme of outstanding dance performances from the UK and abroad, large-scale events for mass public participation, workshops, commissions and debates.

At Ikon Eastside, Liquid Loft/Chris Haring perform Running Sushi, in which 12 dance ‘dishes’ are served up like a sushi menu ready for audience members to chose what is performed. There is a UK premiere of two works, Kelma (The Word) by Meryem Jazouli and Insomnia by Muhanad Rasheed/Iraqi Bodies, which together form part of the Outspoken weekend of new performance from Arab artists. Finally, Xavier Le Roy performs Self Unfinished, which draws on diverse influences from the worlds of science, performance art and contemporary dance.

Muhanad Rasheed – Iraqi Bodies: Insomnia (Iraq)
Saturday 1 May, 6pm

Based on the life and poems of the most famous Palestinian poet, Mahmoud Darwish, Kelma is a meditation on exile and absence – and how the creation of art can transcend oppression and darkness, overcoming personal and political conflicts. Insomnia, created in Iraq in 2005, sees three men attempt to find a space of tranquility and repose in a world filled with uncertainty. Part of the Outspoken weekend, new performances from Arab Artists curated by Eckhard Thiemann.
Xavier Le Roy
Self Unfinished
Thursday 13 & Friday 14 May, 8pm
Age guidance: 16+ years (performance includes nudity)
Tickets £10, £8 concessions

Drawing on diverse influences from the worlds of science, performance art and contemporary dance, Xavier Le Roy welcomes us to a white stage resembling a research lab, and gradually starts to transform into different kinds of creatures, some recognisable and others rather indeterminable.

To book tickets for any of these IDFB performances please call the Birmingham Hippodrome on 0844 338 5000 (transaction charges may apply). Please note tickets for these performances are not available to book online.
