DECORATING THE QUARRY
In June 2011, from Friday 17th to Sunday 19th, The Quarry will be decorated with festoons and banners in the style of the 1864 Shropshire Olympian Festival ….
“… over the whole length of the bottom walk suspended from tree to tree at a height of forty feet, were banners of all nations …decorated with flags and festooned with arches and garlands of flowers … thirty gothic arches in perspective were formed by hundreds of Egyptian and Chinese moresques, lozenges, balloons and lanterns. The colours were beautifully arranged ...” SHREWSBURY CHRONICLE, Friday September 9, 1864

To prepare for this great event, WORKSHOPS to guide and assist participants will be held around the county from the New Year.
Please tell us as soon as possible if you would like to –
1. HELP DECORATE THE QUARRY under the guidance of our professional designer. Each group, village or town wishing to join in will be given a section to create with some guidance and materials.
2. ENTER THE SPORTING COMPETITIONS. Either by entering the Carnival Games (see contact above) or the Severn Loop Race (see contact above) or through the Shropshire Team Challenge (contact the Festival Office).
3. BE PART OF THE GRAND FINALE ON SUNDAY, by SINGING the Festival Anthem. You can be part of an existing Choir or combine with some others just for this occasion. Our professional music director will visit you with a CD and guide your rehearsals.
4. HELP CREATE A VICTORIAN SCENE. Dress up and take part in a scene of Victorian life, which will be performed informally on the Saturday and Sunday. Costume provided. Rehearsals will be held in Shrewsbury.
5. SHOW YOUR SKILLS IN ARTS AND CRAFTS. Enter the knitting, embroidery, culinary art and flower arranging competitions.
6. VOLUNTEER. Large numbers of people are required to help manage a festival of this size. If your club/group would like to help with a particular event, or if you personally wish to volunteer, please contact the Festival office.
NO PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE IS REQUIRED for the above. For instance we hope that regular choirs will wish to join in the Grand Finale of Massed Choirs, but an ad hoc group will be just as welcome.
If you belong to an ORGANISED CLUB/SOCIETY/GROUP - e.g. W.I., Young Farmers etc, with expertise in any of the above, we would very much like to discuss how your group can be involved with the Festival.
If you are an EXPERT in a traditional CRAFT, we would like to invite you to display your skills and interest and/or offer advice to others. Please contact the Festival Office.
